Ask for Accounting to be Considered an Essential Service in Georgia

GSCPA has just shared this letter with Governor Brian Kemp's Office asking that the accounting profession be considered an essential service should a need arise to issue a shelter-in-place order.

The letter cites the reasons for this professional designation, "Accounting services are critical to the financial markets and the operations of our counties and municipalities behind the scenes, especially when considering legally mandated activities. Further, a precedent has been set in other states; for example, shelter-in-place orders issued by counties in California included accounting services as essential. The same holds true for New York as well where Accounting services are typically considered essential in the same area as banks, insurance and those working in Financial Markets."

It continues to illustrate why accounting services should be considered essential with specific reasons spelling out the work that accountants are expected to do within the coming weeks.

The letter closes with the statement emphasizing the role CPAs play within the struggling community and how essential it is to provide assistance, "We are in an environment where the rules are changing day-to-day. We need calm and rational approaches to the problems ahead of us. By including the accounting profession as essential, you are ensuring that a key resource will be available to individuals and businesses to help them make the critical financial decisions they will face."
