James M. Kane
James M. Kane has a BBA in finance (cum laude with general honors) from University of Georgia; masters of taxation from Georgia State University; J.D. (with distinction) from Emory University). He is an AV rated lawyer on martindale.com and listed on superlawyers.com. James is a tax lawyer licensed in Georgia, North Carolina and New York with 20+ years of experience. James's practice includes (i) trusts and estates controversies and litigation, (ii) trusts and estates tax and asset protection planning, and (iii) trust and estate (probate) administration. James is currently broadening his planning practice to address issues for aging baby boomers (including Medicaid, nursing home planning, etc.). On the flip side to his handling of a wide range of trusts and estates controversies, James's planning work focuses on helping clients prevent and avoid similar problems. He is a member of the Georgia, North Carolina, and New York bars, and maintained a Georgia CPA license from 1984 through 1997. Prior to law school, James was employed in Atlanta as an IRS Revenue Agent in the large-case examination group and as a staff manager with a Fortune 500 corporation in its federal tax audit group. While attending law school, he received a Georgia Federal Tax Conference "Tax Scholar" Award and was a member of the Emory International Law Review. He has published articles in the Emory International Law Review and in the Virginia Tax Review, and most recently in the February / March 2004 CCH Journal of Tax Practice & Procedure, entitled "Family Limited Partnerships and Strangi -- High Anxiety or "What, Me Worry?" James also (along with attorney Juan F. Vasquez, Jr. in Chamberlain Hrdlicka's Houston office) wrote a piece in the October / November 2003 CCH Journal of Tax Practice & Procedure, entitled "The Code Sec. 7525 Tax Practitioner Privilege vs. the "Tax Shelter" Siege: What Will Be the Fallout?"
