Douglas Stein, J.D.
Douglas Stein is the Founder of Stein Law, LLC. The firm was created to provide clients the benefit of large firm experience and quality at a reasonable cost. Mr. Stein concentrates his practice on business planning, tax, and trust and estate planning and administration. He represents owners of closely-held domestic and international businesses, principals of private equity/venture capital/LBO funds, life settlement companies, executives and families of significant wealth in all aspect of their tax and business needs. With extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions and tax leveraged transactions, assisting clients with the complexity of international business transactions, and IRS controversy matters, especially for foreigners with US contacts, Douglas Stein provides careful and sophisticated tax planning and advice that minimizes the costs associated with increasingly complex tax laws and business transactions. Mr. Stein has extensive experience litigation experience, beginning his career with District Counsel for the IRS and he continues to represent his clients in IRS controversy work in both federal and state audits and the U.S. Tax Court. He advises his multinational and international clients on both inbound and outbound transactions, business management issues, and sophisticated estate planning. His expertise is assisting clients in harmonizing their estate and income tax needs for themselves, their families, and their businesses. Mr. Stein’s diverse experience makes him uniquely qualified to spot tricky issues and bring real value to his clients. Being well-published in peer reviewed journals, Douglas Stein lectures frequently on a variety of tax topics and was selected as a Michigan Rising Star and a Georgia Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2012. Douglas Stein is vice-chair of the Business Investment Entities, Partnerships, LLCs and Corporations Committee of the American Bar Association, and frequently lectures at their conferences. He has commented on proposed regulations by the IRS and his comments were incorporated into the final regulations. Mr. Stein received his B.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland and earned his J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
