Health Care Conference Review 2022

The Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) kicked off conferences for the 2022 year on February 24 with the annual Health Care Conference. This is the first conference that GSCPA has held in person since the start of the pandemic. Attendees were able to join this event in person at the GSCPA Learning Center; or attend virtually. Speakers, both local and out of state, discussed and educated on some of the challenges that CPAs within health care organizations face.

William Spohn from Dixon Hughes Goodman LLC, located here in Atlanta, got the conference up and running by covering what is coming next in the health care field, post-pandemic. He covered topics such as the newest industry trends, especially those that are shaping health care leadership, and how to fight against the feelings of burnout.

Ross Cannon and Jonathan Schultz from Mauldin & Jenkins CPAs LLC, also in Atlanta, handled session two of the day by covering the topic of provider relief funds. They spoke on what was learned from the first round of reporting and some tips to exercise in the upcoming reporting periods for the rest of the year.

Kathryn Fletcher and Keara Dowling, both from Draffin & Tucker, LLP, in Atlanta, teamed up for the third session and gave an accounting and auditing update on issues affecting health care organizations. They educated the members on new accounting processes and single audits for the COVID-19 relief funds.

Closing out the last session of the morning, Thomas Hawk, Jennifer Lewin and John Armsby, all from King and Spalding in Atlanta, reviewed the legal and business trends that have impacted the health care industry as a whole and what this looks like in the future. The discussion covered the current Biden Administration initiatives, federal and state policy issues that many are anxiously anticipating, and some of the newest health care innovations.

The afternoon consisted of four different breakout sessions. Those in attendance were able to join two sessions of their choice that consisted of topics ranging from:

  • 340B Program updates, hosted by Matthew Atkins, from Draffin & Tucker, LLP in Albany, Ga.
  • Exempt Organization Tax Updates hosted by Travis Patton and Michael Hoffman from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Washington D.C.
  • Physician Compensation, hosted by Tynan Kugler
  • M&A trends in Health Care, hosted by Even Ottaviano, Bennett Thrasher LLP, and Andrew Susserman, Marsh McLennan, both in Atlanta

The 2022 Health Care conference wrapped up with Joshua Bowen from Warren Averett, LLC in Montgomery, Ala. by giving attendees a walkthrough of internal controls for health care entities. He took everyone back in time and covered the history of how internal control processes started in the beginning and what those are looking like in current trends. He also educated everyone on environmental, social and corporate implications that can affect internal control in the future.

All of the above sessions will be available on-demand at www.gscpa.org in the coming weeks.

The Georgia Society of CPAs thanks all the Health Care Conference attendees, both in-person and online, for being a part of the 2022 Conference. We hope you will plan to join us next year for the 2023 GSCPA Health Care Conference!
