Member Monday: Theresa Scales
Meet this week’s Member Monday, Theresa Scales! Theresa was born and raised in Missouri; she graduated cum laude from Lincoln University (MO) with B.S. in Accounting. She is a mother of two adult sons and daughter-in-love; Theresa is a CPA with the majority of her career being in banking. She is currently serving as Controller at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library; and along with being a member of the GSCPA, he is also a member with the AICPA.
Theresa enjoys walking for exercise and for charitable events; she also listening to podcasts and audiobooks.
A fun fact about her is she trained for and completed her first half-marathon after her youngest son left for college as a distraction to the challenge of becoming an empty-nester. She is passionate about staying connected and spending time with her family and friends. She volunteers in various church ministries, community activities and is a board member for a non-profit focused on mentoring teenage girls throughout the community.
When asked why she chose to become a CPA, she stated, “I chose the profession as a way to fulfill my love for numbers and service-oriented nature. I chose to study accounting in high school and college which led me to becoming a CPA at the recommendation of my college accounting professor. Being a CPA means getting the opportunity to do what I love as a professional while offering a much needed service to the business community and particularly in the nonprofit world. This quote personifies what being a CPA means to me – “Doing what you love is freedom. Loving what you do is happiness.” – Lana Del Rey”.
Theresa has been a member with the Georgia Society for 21 years and has served on the Business and Industry Advisory Council, the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force and was also a recipient of GSCPA’s 2022 Outstanding Member in Industry Award.
Theresa, we are so thankful for all of your years of service to the Profession!
