Member Monday Spotlight: Rick McCoy

Rick is a licensed CPA who has been practicing in Georgia for more than a decade. His primary focuses are passthrough taxation for closely held businesses, family enterprises, and high net-worth individuals. He provides planning and tax advising expertise to people in the manufacturing, distribution, real estate, and healthcare arenas. His experiences also involve extensive representation for clients under IRS and state examinations.

While ambitious, result-driven, and dedicated to the CPA profession and Moore Colson, Rick still makes ample time for family, friends, and hobbies. He believes that although hard work often drives favorable outcomes, these efforts are only possible with the generous help from family and the joy they provide. He has been fortunate enough in his career to have wonderful mentors that have helped guide him on the CPA journey.

Rick and his wife Katie have been married for five years and reside in Canton, GA, with their 1-year-old son and rescue terrier, Hatfield. They enjoy going to the neighborhood pool and park in their free time, taking day trips, and trying new restaurants. Rick thrives on improving his golf game and traveling to new places (especially cruising). He also enjoys outdoor activities like boating on Lake Allatoona and hiking in North Georgia. As graduates of Auburn University, he and Katie still attend Auburn athletic events and reminisce on their college experiences.

As someone who values continued education, Rick will attend the University of Georgia’s Professional MBA program starting in Fall 2023. The goal is to learn different approaches to business and management with leadership styles in varying industries. He intends to become well-rounded and add additional managerial tools to his skillset.

He chose the CPA profession as it is the language of business and the gateway to understanding the “why” behind a company’s strategies, successes, and failures. He is passionate about teaching and leading people, adding value to client’s businesses, and being an integral part of their success.

Being a CPA is more than compliance or following a procedural checklist. For Rick, it is about immersing himself in firm and client environments to help drive positive experiences and overwhelming satisfaction.

For someone actively studying and sitting for CPA licensure, the profession should encourage them to lean on their resources and support system to help them accomplish an attainable goal that will add tremendous value to their future, regardless of industry. It is important to remember that the trials of sitting for the CPA exams are not permanent but only temporary hurdles to a promising future in the business world.
